What are Photofacials and How do They Work?

RosaceaTired of those unsightly spots on your face that come from aging, birthmarks, Rosacea, veins and other blemishes?  Now there’s a simple procedure that is available to those who want to even out their skin tone and reduce unattractive marks.  IPL Photofacials implement new technology to correct these benign and fairly harmless skin conditions.

Otherwise known as photo rejuvenation, Photofacials are used to treat many conditions:

  • Fine lines
  • Spider veins on the legs and face
  • Birthmarks
  • Large pores
  • Age spots
  • Freckles
  • Dilated Capillaries
  • Sun spots
  • Hyper pigmentation
  • Rosacea
  • Port wine stains

How it Works

The target area is heated with the help of a highly advanced computer.  This computer changes the light pulse to a certain wavelength range, in turn destroying the targeted spots without damaging the “normal” tissue around the area.  During the procedure, the degree and depth of heat is controlled to avoid any serious risks or complications.  The machine directs light pulses at age spots, freckles, blood vessel and other conditions that cause discoloration of the skin.

What to Expect

Patients are required to wear protective eyewear during the procedure, and may have a topical anesthetic applied if desired.  Once the area is numb, a gel is applied and a prism is placed over the specified area of treatment.  The first treatment may be lower intensity than the following treatments to ensure that the skin won’t be damaged and to help determine the tolerance level of the skin for this specific treatment.

You can expect a treatment every 3-4 weeks during the process, and for the best results, five treatments are typically recommended.  Treatments last less than an hour.  Some patients also require maintenance treatments one or two times per year after the initial treatment series.

Improvement Expectations

After your first series of five treatments, you can expect your skin to look rejuvenated and refreshed.  You’ll notice improvement in both your skin texture and tone, along with noticeable reductions in red and brown discolored areas of the skin.  The size of your pores may be reduced by a third and red discoloration will be reduced in patients with abnormal flushing or Rosacea.  You can expect a more beautiful overall look to your skin after your initial series of treatments.

Post Treatment Expectations

Although your skin may look flushed after your procedure, you are free to return to work or any other regular activities immediately after your treatment.  Many patients report a mild glow that is not noticeable to others immediately after treatment.

IPL Photofacial treatments are extremely safe and have been successful for hundreds of thousands of patients to improve the skin and reduce spots.
